New Delhi: Low cost carriers like Indigo, SpiceJet and GoAir will shift some part of their operations to terminal 2 of the Delhi International Airport (DIAL) from the beginning of the winter schedule. The terminal one of DIAL has a capacity of approximately 18 million passengers annually which has almost saturated. SpiceJet was earlier asked to shift its operations to terminal two but it had reservations since other carriers were not shifting operations. It operator apprehended that it would lose traffic. In a meeting last week with the airlines, aviation ministry officials have given a few options to the airlines which includes shifting 30% of the total operations, operating all flights to Mumbai and Bangalore from T2 or moving all the new flights on new and existing routes including RCS from the second terminal.
“We will resolve the issue within the next month and the airlines will have to decide how they will move their operations to the second terminal. This issue has been there for some time and needs to be resolved as soon as possible. Otherwise there would be huge mess during the winter months,” said a senior aviation ministry official.
DIAL also plans to expand the existing terminal 1 and the expansion work would take place once airlines move to the second terminal. Before new terminal 3 came into being all the international flight used to operate from terminal two. Full service carriers like Air India, Jet Airways and Vistara already operate from terminal 3.
