Civic body to deploy additional vans to catch stray dogs around airport

Pune: With the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) set to hire a private firm to take care of stray dogs, weekly trips of dog vans in and around the airport are set to increase.
The stray dog issue has been a cause of concern for passengers, mainly those coming from abroad, and PMC officials told TOI that they would need an extra dog van if the trips were to increase.
"A tender has been floated which calls for appointing a private party to operate one dog van in the city. At present, trips to catch hold of stray dogs in and around the airport take place once a week. We can increase the trips if we get more dog vans. With the tender having been floated and things taking shape, one can expect more trips soon," Sandeep Bende, an official with PMC's health department said.
The issue of stray dogs roaming in the terminal building area and also in front of departure and arrival gates of the airport has been raised by passengers quite a few times. TOI had reported the matter in May following which the issue was picked up in the advisory committee meeting, which was held late last month.
