Evacuation chute deploys by accident on Jet aircraft

Mumbai: In a freak incident, the emergency evacuation chute of a London-bound Jet Airways aircraft was accidentally deployed as it was being prepared for the flight at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) on Sunday.

An airline spokesperson said there was no official statement about the incident, but other officials said a report would be sent to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) as a matter of compliance. “The incident took place on Jet Airways flight 9W-118 to London. The evacuation slide of the left rear door was accidentally deployed,” an official said.

A DGCA official said the escape slide is contained in a carbon fibre pressure cap, which is covered by a casing of material similar to the aircraft’s interior walls. Pushing a lever located on the interior door arms the slide mechanism.

“When the lever is in the ‘armed’ position, opening the door pulls the slide out of its pack. It then drops to the correct orientation for inflation to begin. When a flight attendant issues the call to ‘cross-check doors’ after landing, it’s a signal for one attendant to check another’s action to disarm the doors and prevent the slides from deploying inadvertently,” the official said.
