Innovative' gold smuggling bid by passenger foiled by DRI at Karipur airport

Kozhikode: The attempt by a passenger to smuggle gold in the form of a clay-like malleable material concealed in his slippers was foiled by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Kozhikode at the Karipur Airport on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, DRI officials intercepted Kunhayi Koya, a native of Kakoor, who had arrived by Air India Express flight IX- 344 from Dubai in the morning.
On examination, about 2 kg of clay like material in which gold was mixed into was found concealed from inside both the slippers worn by him.
DRI officials were able to extract 1.22 kg of 24- carat gold from the material with the help of a goldsmith. The gold is estimated to be Rs 35 lakh.
