Why Chennai airport may miss the flight

Chennai: Around 13 airports in the country will get shopping plazas, business parks, corporate offices, convention and exhibition halls as part of a plan by Airports Authority of India (AAI) to boost non-aeronautical revenue, but Chennai will miss the flight.
Though AAI wants to develop Chennai as a hub for international flights, it would be several years before it could become as a self-sustaining commercial entity, like Changi airport in Singapore or Incheon airport in South Korea. AAI's residential quarters and a wedding hall at Chennai airport can be used for commercial purpose, but priority is to add more flight parking bays.
World over, major airports are being transformed into 'air cities' with sprawling business and residential enclaves. However, Chennai airport will not be one because it requires all the land that can be spared for flight operations. The only possible avenue it will be left with to earn some money, other than from landing and parking charges from airlines, will be from car parking contracts as two multi-level car parks that can accommodate more than 1,000 cars each will be built in the coming months.
