Jet Airways, GoAir to operate services from Kial

Kochi: With Kannur International Airport (Kial) nearing take-off stage, two major private carriers—Jet Airways and GoAir—have confirmed that they would operate flight services from the new airport. Kial, the fourth international airport in the state, will be opened to traffic in September next year.
"Jet Airways and GoAir have confirmed their services to and from Abu Dhabi and Damam, respectively. Air India Express is in the final stage of giving clearance to international routes such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Muscat, Sharjah and Riyadh. Even Air India has expressed desire to start its services from Kial in the domestic and international sector," said a Kial official.
The official said Jet Airways and GoAir is planning to operate flights from the aiport, coming up at Mattannur, in the domestic sector as well.
Meanwhile, several international air carriers— Emirates, Gulf Air, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Air Arabia, Saudia, Oman Air, Silk Air, SriLankan Airlines, Tiger Airways and Fly Dubai—are currently holding talks with the airport and the ministry of the civil aviation in order to launch their operations from Kial.
Kial's managing director, P Balakrian said by the end of the first year, they are expecting over 1 million passengers in the international sector and 0.3 million passengers in the domestic sector.
He said Kial is focusing on establishing flight services within areas that come under the Udan scheme that has been launched by the Union government in order to encourage the use of regional airports. Through the scheme, the government aims at making flying affordable by capping fares at Rs 2,500 per seat per hour.
Under this scheme, Kial plans to operate flights to Goa, Madurai, Mangaluru, Kochi, Coimbatore and Tirupati.
