Although Nagpur is walking abreast with the national growth rate of 10 per cent in Information Technology (IT) sector, it needs additional push from policy-makers and influencers to make its economy more vibrant. This can be possible if Nagpur has a strong air connectivity with Tier 1 and Tier II cities. Taking serious note of it, the Vidarbha Association of Software Exporters (VASE) and the Vidarbha Industries Association (VIA) have mailed representation to R N Choubey, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. After sending representation, Amitabh Khanna, President of VASE recently met R N Choubey in New Delhi and reiterated the demand.
Khanna thanked the Ministry of Civil Aviation for adding flights from Nagpur to Bengaluru and one more flight to Hyderabad. He said: “With growing demand, Nagpur is still to be connected with Chennai. Chennai, along with Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad, houses most of the corporates, MNC offices, and have decision-makers. Chennai is the largest industrial and commercial hub of south India.”Khanna said, Chennai has an economic base anchored by the automobile, software services, medical tourism, hardware, manufacturing and financial services. Nagpur should figure in the list of cities which are witnessing industrial and commercial growth and it should have seamless connectivity with Tier I and Tier II cities. “The decision-makers and influencers will like to visit the city in the morning, do their business and leave in evening,” he said.
Nagpur also needed to be connected with Tier II cities like Patna, Ranchi and later Bhopal and Bhubaneswar, too, in the same way as Bengaluru was connected with such cities. “Such a connectivity has made Bengaluru the most desirable city to work in India. It is seamlessly connected with all Tier I and Tier II cities. IT firms in Bengaluru employ about 35 per cent of India’s pool of 2.5 million IT professionals and account for the highest IT-related exports in the country. We in Nagpur also want to achieve similar heights as Bengaluru,” Khanna said. He said, as there is no direct air connectivity to states like Bihar and Jharkhand, people from Nagpur are avoiding to visit these states. If there will be air connectivity, Nagpurians will visit places in Bihar and Jharkhand to explore business opportunities.
