IGI to know who’s on a flight before it lands

New Delhi: Come May and Delhi’s IGI Airport will join the league of select airports across the world using the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) to scrutinise foreign travellers hours before their plane lands.
For the average passenger, it means time saved on immigration and Customs checks. Several countries as part of post-9/11 initiatives to curb terrorist attacks have adopted APIS. The project was initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and a gazette notification made implementation compulsory from October, 2005. Under the system, all international flights coming to India will have to send across details of passengers on board within 15 minutes of their departure.
This will include name of the passenger, date of birth, nationality, sex, passport number, country of issuing the passport, country of residence, the visa number and date and place of its issuance.
