AAI won’t place radar where city needs it

Mumbai: The Airport Authority of India has refused permission to the meteorology department in the city to install a Doppler Radar at the Bombay Flying Club (BFC) in Santacruz. The Met department believes the site is an ideal site for the radar that can better predict weather conditions and help people brace for situations like the last year’s deluge.
The state government is planning to buy a Doppler Radar for a more precise prediction of weather conditions. However, it has not yet been able to finalise a site for the installation of the radar. The site where the radar is installed should have unrestricted view within 5 kms of its base. “The AAI gave us Dahisar and such other sites, where there are high-rise buildings,” C V V Bhadran, deputy director general, Meteorology, Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) said.
