Airport check-in counter rentals to soar rise

Mumbai: The newly floated private operator, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), is planning to increase check-in counter rentals by six times at the Mumbai airport, the country's busiest. The existing monthly rentals per counter are Rs 5,000, but according to sources, MIAL may increase it to Rs 30,000. However, MIAL denied any such proposal.
The Mumbai airport currently facilitates more than 500 aircraft movements per day and carries around 50,000 passengers daily, resulting in handling more than 40% of India's air traffic. Domestic carriers have expressed mixed opinions about the possible development. The move could be a good revenue source since Mumbai airport already has about 200 check-in counters. The latest 1B terminal will alone have 80 check-in counters after the complete upgradation.
