Centre's nod to import of super jumbo carriers

Mumbai: The central government has given its nod to the A 380, the super jumbo that can carry 555 passengers. Kingfisher Airlines, which had placed orders for five A 380s last year, got approval from the civil aviation ministry's Aircraft Acquisition Committee for the import of the behemoth carriers recently.
Confirming this, Vijay Mallya, chairman and managing director of Kingfisher Airlines, said the first of the A 380s will be delivered in 2010.
"We plan to operate direct flights to New York from Mumbai and Delhi with the A 380,"he said. When asked whether he was expecting teething problems in operating the two-tier heavyweight in the Mumbai and Delhi airports, Mallya said his airline would not be the first to bring the aircraft to India.
"International airlines like Emirates, which have placed major orders for A 380, would be getting the deliveries from 2007 onwards. Some of them have plans to fly them to India,"he said.
