AAI employees declare 36-hr strike

New Delhi: Within hours of Delhi and Mumbai airports being fully taken over by private consortia on Wednesday midnight, Airports Authority of India (AAI) employees' joint forum has announced a 36-hour strike from August 17.
Forum convenor M K Ghoshal said their nationwide 'satyagraha' would begin at 7 am on August 17 and end at 7 pm the next day. He added that 14,000 of the 21,000 AAI employees across India would go on a mass leave and services "would certainly" be affected.
"The government has gone ahead with the privatisation process without consulting the unions. On Wednesday midnight, the airports were handed over to private players.
A tripartite panel was to have been formed to discuss the process of modernising Delhi and Mumbai airports but that wasn't done. Hence, we are resorting to the satyagraha to get heard," said Ghoshal.
