Airlines will spruce up staff check process

Bangalore: After it emerged that one of the 24 suspects arrested for plotting to blow up US-bound flights from London was a Jet Airways employee, airlines spruced up employee verification and background check procedures.
“I have put a stringent internal background check system in place for employees who have access to the aircraft and airport in view of the security threat,” said Air Deccan managing director Captain GR Gopinath.
Air India company secretary S Venkat said even though India already had quite a foolproof security clearance procedure, involving police certification for airline employees, many employers gave it a pass.
Rohit Ramachandran, country head in India for UAE’s overseas budget carrier Air Arabia, said, “We hire people only after they pass the muster of police and the CID.”
