Budget carriers gnaw away full-service airlines' market share

New Delhi: Air Deccan and other low-cost carriers have severely cut into the market share of full- service carriers in the first quarter of 2006 and also cornered a large chunk of new air travellers.
While Air Deccan has more than doubled its share from seven per cent last year to 15.2 in the first quarter, other airlines like Kingfisher, SpiceJet, Paramount and GoAir have also eaten into the market pie so far controlled by large carriers like Indian, Jet Airways and Air Sahara.
According to latest official figures, the market share of Indian declined from 34.7 per cent in 2005 to 23.9 in the first quarter of this year, while that of Jet Airways came down to 34.9 from 44.1 per cent.Air Sahara's market share also fell from 14.2 per cent to 9.7 per cent during the same period.
