Cargo soars 25% from Scottish airports

Cargo volumes at Scotland's major airports have shot up 25 per cent to more than 50,000 tonnes in the past year, according to BAA Scotland.
The company, which manages Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports, ascribed much of the accelerated growth in freight volumes to the success of Edinburgh Airport, where cargo volumes grew by almost 40 per cent.
International traffic across the three airports has grown by more than 8 per cent over the past 12 months, following new services to destinations including Berlin, Orlando, Atlanta, Helsinki and Lahore.
Dubai-based airline Emirates, which flies from Glasgow airport, has shipped more than 13,000 tonnes of cargo since the service was launched in April 2004. Shipments include whisky, flown to the key markets of India, Korea and other Asian destinations.
