Home Secretary: Prepare for new terror challenges

New Delhi:Security in airports and other vital installations across the country was beefed up today following the terror plot to blow up 10 US-bound flights from Britain.
Union Home Secretary VK Duggal, who chaired a meeting of top airport security officials, asked them to study the new ways in which explosive materials were planned to be smuggled into planes at London’s Heathrow Airport.
Duggal told the meeting, attended by officials of various security agencies including Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and Central Industrial Security Force, to take steps to meet the new challenges.
Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said security at major airports had already been tightened following the Mumbai blasts and as part of the drill for the Independence Day celebrations.
CISF sources said that along with banning the entry of visitors, emergency anti-hijacking measures have also been put in place.
Other measures taken include manual checking of cabin baggage in certain ‘‘specific destination flights’’, increased profiling of passengers and enhanced deployment of security personnel in plain clothes.
