Qantas passengers are facing massive increases in the fuel levy for overseas flights, with a round trip to the UK jumping almost $400.
With record oil prices hitting its bottom line, the airline today announced a series of major levy hikes for a range of international destinations. From August 31 the one-way surcharge on flights to the UK and Europe will leap from $98 to $185 for a direct flight and to $196 for a two-sector flight.
Flights to the US, Canada, South America, South Africa and India will now attract a surcharge of $145, up from $98.
Flights to Asia, Pacific and Honolulu will have a surcharge of $115, up from $98, while flights to New Zealand will now have a surcharge of $65, up from $56.
Qantas executive general manager John Borghetti said the changes reflect the introduction of a new four-level surcharge system, based on the distance travelled.
