Govt clears redesigning plan of Bangalore airport

New Delhi: The government on Tuesday approved amendments to the Concession Agreement of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) to allow redesigning of the initial phase of the development project at an additional cost of Rs 519 crore.
The new airport, which is expected to become operational in 2008, is being developed as per the traffic projections made in 2002. But a revised study conducted by the BIAL showed that the traffic of 8.4 million passengers, originally projected by M/s SH&E in 2000 for 2020, would be achieved by 2010. In 2008 itself the new airport is expected to handle a traffic of seven million passengers.
The aircraft movement will also be much higher than the original forecast. The latest projections show that the airport will be handling 1,06,000 aircraft movements in 2010 against the earlier projection of 41,000 aircraft movements. As per the new design, the total built-up area of the passenger terminal building will be 71,000 square metre as against 55,850 square metre planned earlier.
