Grounded airhostess set to fly

Mumbai: Jennifer Chavan, the Air-India (A-I) employee who was grounded for being overweight, would resume duty soon. However, she would have to undergo a three-week training before joining the cabin crew.
Chavan, who had joined the airline in 1977, was grounded in 2002 for being overweight. She reduced her weight and started flying in November 2003. However, in September 2004, she was grounded again and was made to do office work for a year. Chavan took up the matter with A-I, but the management did not respond. Finally, in August 2006, she moved the Bombay High Court.
On September 1, the high court directed that if she was below 79 kg, she could resume flying and asked her to get her weight checked at Nanavati Hospital. Chavan underwent weight check on September 2 and weighed 77.5 kg with a body mass index (BMI) of 29.9.
