Left demands review of airports modernisation

New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the modernisation process of airports by private companies is unlikely to fade soon. The Left parties are insisting on cross-examining the government on the nitty-gritty involved in the process.After the Airport Authority of India’s (AAI) recent rejection of a Chinese company—Shenzen Cimac-Tianda Airport Support Ltd, from bidding for its passenger bridges citing security reasons, CPI(M)’s Tapan Sen raised the matter with the Prime Minister.
“When the government could allow companies from other countries to develop airports, then why only the Chinese companies were being singled out?” Sen questioned the Prime Minister in the letter, a copy of which is with FE.
Accusing the government of pursuing ’double standards’ in the name of privatisation, the Left leaders questioned, “When the government could reject a private company’s bid citing security reasons, what was the need for it to pursue joint ventures for the airport modernisations?
