SC refuses to stay HC order on Haj subsidy

New Delhi: The issue of subsidy to Haj pilgrimage today reached the Supreme Court, which directed the listing of the matter on September 18 for hearings.
The Centre brought an appeal against the verdict of the Allahabad HC, which had struck down any subsidy to the religious pilgrimage on the ground that in a secular country no government subsidy or sanction could be given for a religious pilgrimage.
Solicitor-General GE Vahanvati mentioned the matter for urgent hearing during the ‘mention hour’ of the SC and sought a stay on the HC verdict. A Bench listed the matter for hearing on September 18, but declined to stay the HC order.
The pilgrimage starts in November.
