Philippine tourism woos big, lucrative Indian market

The Department of Tourism is tapping the high-end Indian tourist market to fill up the hotels in Metro Manila and lure them into spending in the retail, entertainment and gaming segments.
Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano told reporters his agency was opening up to India as a market for tourists.
“Indians are targeting Metro Manila for shopping, entertainment and gaming. There are eight million affluent Indians who travel every year and we are tapping this market,” he said.
The tourism department has forged an agreement with carriers Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines.
“The connectivity is there already for Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines since both carriers fly to destinations both in India and the Philippines,” Durano said.
Local carriers Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines are not flying to any destination in India.
