Runway will put US, Asia in our reach

Gold Coast holidaymakers will be able to fly direct for the first time to the US and Japan when groundbreaking Gold Coast Airport upgrades are completed.
Direct flights to Malaysia, India and China also are likely, according to Queensland Airports Limited managing director Dennis Chant.
Mr Chant unveiled the plans yesterday as work officially started on the 460m airport runway extension, now that essential works on the Tugun bypass tunnel have been finished.
He said the existing runway, which is just in excess of 2km in length, is too short for Boeing 767s to take off with a full load of passengers and fuel, making long-distance flights impossible.
"With the extended runway, that'll get us all the way to Japan, Bangkok and other Asian countries," said Mr Chant.
