Become world leader in aviation, Kalam urges HAL

Bangalore: Stressing that Indian’s premier aircraft maker Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) should become the market leader in one or two aircraft programmes, President A P J Abdul Kalam urged it to venture into making unmanned supersonic fighters, remote-piloted vehicles, space systems and their derivatives.
“Working through a full cycle of design, development, production and marketing of the total aircraft systems indigenously will enable HAL to become a world leader in aviation,” Kalam said in an interview to HAL’s official journal The Plane to be launched later this month. Asked about the marketing mantra HAL should adopt, Kalam said the customer must get the best performance at the most competitive cost. “Customer is the king and he should get the product at the right time and in the right place,” the President maintained.
Speaking about some of HAL’s frontline projects, he termed the indigenously designed light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas as an excellent combat machine. “We should persevere and ensure that it graduates for squadron service before 2010,” Kalam maintained. On the advanced light helicopter (ALH) Dhruv, he urged HAL to design new-generations of the machine that could cater to both civilian and service requirements.
