Lawmakers worried about cut-throat competition among airlines

New Delhi: The Parliamentarians on Tuesday expressed concern over the health of the civil aviation sector due to the indiscriminate low pricing by airlines as well as the high price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF).
Participating in the meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Civil Aviation, some MPs also sought the employees' representation in the decision-making process for the proposed merger of state-owned carriers Indian and Air- India.
Members also expressed concern over "disturbance" of the schedules of Air-India due to VIP movement, saying AI planes were taken out of schedule to cater to VIP travel.
Expressing concern over high fuel costs, they wanted ATF to be brought under the 'declared goods' category to bring down the tax component on it, thereby reducing its price.
