AI, Indian merger to get grievances panel

New Delhi: Following the Union Cabinet’s approval for the merger of Air India and Indian, the government is planning to set up a three-tier grievance redressal machinery (GRM) which will ensure the smooth integration of manpower of the two state-owned carriers. An inter-ministerial panel is also being set up to facilitate the merger, government sources said.
The machinery will consists of an inter-ministerial committee — including a representative each from civil aviation ministry, law ministry, department of public enterprises and department of personnel and training — apart from an integration champion and an executive director (ED) looking after the merger.
The civil aviation ministry will constitute a dedicated unit under the supervision of the shortlisted executive director to address employee grievances at the ‘individual’ level. While the civil aviation ministry has pursued the merger proposal, various groups of employees have been resisting it because of their worries regarding employment security, salaries and promotion.
To tide over these human resource issues, the civil aviation ministry is expected to create wage parity for employees of two carriers besides ensuring that their ranks, compensation and perquisites are protected.
