Air India probe close to 'sinking'

Ottawa: The head of the Air India inquiry is urging government lawyers to redouble their efforts to ensure that more of the paper trail surrounding the 1985 terrorist bombing will see the light of day.
Justice John Major threatened two weeks ago to shut down the inquiry unless Ottawa relented in its security-secret claims.
He acknowledged yesterday that federal lawyers have been making a good-faith effort to comply, but warned again that the inquiry is in danger of "sinking."
The commission is sidestepping the dispute for the rest of this week, focusing on background testimony.
But the concerns over secrecy will be front and centre again in a week or two.
The government has insisted that many of the police, intelligence and diplomatic papers related to the bombing must remain secret -- and be dealt with behind closed doors -- to protect Canada's national security and its relations with foreign countries.
