The Air India management on Friday decided to cut down the number of cabin crew being put on duty on its aircraft by atleast two in each flight.
“The existing cabin crew complement was not in line with international standard and was a subject of controversy for a long time,” said a senior Air India official on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the press.
The new measures would come into effect from March 15, 2007. The airline also said that the new productivity measures would release a sizeable number cabin crew from the existing force to be deployed in the yet to be inducted new fleet of aircraft.
Currently Air India has 2000 cabin crews and 36 aircraft in its fleet. The 68 new aircraft would be joining the airline in three years.
The airline feels that the new measures would not only rationalize the work practices but also result in optimum utilization of manpower.
Air India’s requirement of crew for induction of new fleet is estimated at 500 per year over the next seven years. Air India spokesperson without commenting confirmed the development.
