Bunch of aviators may fly idle airstrips

New Delhi: In a move that may boost the country’s position on the world aviation map, the government is considering development of over 300 airstrips that are currently lying idle. These airstrips, many of which are in close proximity to important cities, may be developed with private participation, a government source said.
The civil aviation ministry is likely to offer these airstrips in the form of ‘clusters’ to private companies for modernisation. Interested parties will have to bid for ‘bunches’ of airstrips, rather than indulging in ‘cherry-picking’ to bag the most viable projects. Bunches will be created by clubbing some airstrips in a region as a bouquet, which comprise potentially profitable as well as loss-making airstrips, government sources said.
A similar ‘cluster’ approach is being adopted in selecting private parties for the modernisation of 35 non-metro airports.
