Threats at Indian airports on the rise

New Delhi: The number of alerts of terror strikes at Indian airports increased nearly by half last year compared to the previous year amid an increased number of intelligence reports of security threats, a top official said on Wednesday.
In 2006, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the agency responsible for protecting 54 Indian airports, received 42 terror-related alerts, almost one a week, compared to 28 in the previous year, CISF director-general S.I.S. Ahmed said.
These alerts included intelligence reports of hijacks, bombs on planes and threat of militants to storm airports. Some of them were based on "highly specific" information, giving the number of people who could be involved, CISF sources said.
