Air India memorial gets green light

The Vancouver Park Board has approved the design for the commemorative playground and memorial monument in Stanley Park for the 331 victims of the Air India bombings.
An Air India jet blew up off the coast of Ireland in 1985, killing 329 people, many of whom were from Vancouver. Another bomb destined for an Air India flight exploded at Tokyo's Narita airport the same day, killing two baggage handlers.
The monument, which will be built near Second Beach is simple at the request of the victims' families, says its designer, Eric Lees
The names of the victims will go on the 18-metre wall, which will slope from one side and peak at about 2½ metres.
"It also represents metaphorically the trajectory of the flight that was cut short off the coast of Ireland."
Lees said there will also be many new features added to the existing Ceperly playground area, including a slide and seating areas for families.
The project is expected to be completed by July. The $800,000 cost is being paid by the federal government.
