14th 738 for domestic carrier

Mumbai: Poised to take on the competition brewing in the low-cost carrier segment, Air India Express on Thursday inducted a 14th aircraft to its fleet, a Boeing 737-800. With this, the national low-cost carrier will be able to increase frequencies from June 15. Air India Express, which currently operates 114 flights per week, would now be flying 126 flights per week; the additional seven flights will be from non-metro sectors to Dubai.
Sighting the induction as part of the fleet renewal and augmentation, Air India Chairman and Managing Director, V Thulasidas, said, “We would be looking at expanding the number of flights during summer time. We will also be adding another 11 aircrafts till 2008 to the fleet.” He was speaking to the media persons on board the aircraft at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
“ Thirteen pilots from the Indian Air Force would join us after three months. We are trying to address the issue of the shortage in engineering staff, abroad we have outsourced most of our engineering functions,” Air India Express Chief Operating Officer Capt PP Singh said.
