AI to allow travellers to surf

New Delhi: Air India has decided against introducing inflight mobile phone technology in the new planes that would start joining the fleet from May-end. The airline took this decision after fiercely debating the pros and cons. But the new planes would get internet connections that would allow passengers to send SMSes. The airline will get both the new generation Boeing 777-200 lone and extended range aircraft this year.
Inflight mobile phones have the normal international roaming rates and now with cheaper calling cards available, people can keep talking without burning a hole in their pocket.
But armed with a new fleet, AI is not willing to be left behind now. "Our planes are going to have internet connections. We have found a company that will do the job as ‘Connection By Boeing' has stopped giving this service. So from the third plane onward, we will have internet on board that would allow people to send SMSes," Thulasidas said.
Jet and Kingfisher also plan to introduce inflight mobile technique in coming years.
