Delhi airport upgrade on track

New Delhi: Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL), a joint venture consortium between the GMR group, Airports Authority of India, Fraport, Malaysian Airport and India Development Fund, which is undertaking the modernisation of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), on Thursday, completed its first year of operations. DIAL took charge of the IGI Airport on May 3, 2006.
In the past one year, the passenger traffic at Delhi airport has gone up by 26%, from 16.23 million in 2005-06 to 20.44 million in 2006-07, while the aircraft movement went up by 21%.
The master plan for the new airport complex has already been submitted to the civil aviation ministry and work has started on the integrated passenger terminal building and runway in February this year. The new terminal would be completed by 2010 before the Commonwealth Games. However in 2008, a new runway and domestic terminal will be constructed to cater to the growing traffic.
On the air-side, additional parking stands, rapid exit taxiways, parallel taxiways and link taxiways have been opened, besides adding new follow-me vehicles in the airport.
