New Delhi: Government is considering a proposal from Federation of Indian Airlines to allow airlines to serve and sell alcohol to passengers. Current rules debar airlines from serving beer or wine in domestic flights.
However, the rule is relaxed for international carriers flying to and from India. Domestic carriers point out that serving beer or wine on the national routes would help them to differentiate their on-board hospitality service and may enhance overall customer experience.
Industry players point out that even though low-cost carriers do not offer food to passengers, selling of liquor on-board can give a major leg up to in-flight revenues. There are instances of low-cost carriers internationally selling liquor to passengers.
However, senior government officials point out that one needs to take cultural issues into consideration while giving the go-ahead.
