Mumbai: With May 3 marking the completion of one year since the modernisation of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) was handed over to the newly formed company, the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the airport can boast of a few achievements even as it came face to face with some stark realities.
MIAL is a joint venture between the GVK Industries-SA consortium and the Airports Authority of Inda (AAI).
MIAL has initiated a number changes like introducing two rapid taxiways, 'India' and 'W' along with a parallel taxiway, 'A4'. It has increased the number of check-in counters at Terminal 1B (80 in all, which is almost twice the number that were present earlier).
However, the most daunting task for MIAL would be now to vacate the 276 acres of land in the proximity of the airport currently encroached upon by nearly 80,000 slum dwellers.
