Mumbai: MIAL has now commenced with its plans to move out and relocate the various government colonies housed on airport land, and replace the existing two and three-storeyed buildings with high-rise towers.
The airport developers are seeking housing experts “for planning, developing and constructing residential colonies at Mumbai Airport, involving construction of about 2.8 lakh sq.mts.”
In effect, this would mean that all government colonies existing on the airport land will be relocated, and tenants moved to new residential complexes. These include the flood-prone Air India and Indian Airlines colonies at Kalina, the Post and Telegraphs Department colony and the Central Public Works Department quarters near the Western Express Highway, which are spread over 102 acres of land.
In addition, MIAL is also eying the housing premises of AAI along the Western Express Highway, which is spread over 2,02,919.44 sq mts or 50 acres.
700-odd families of the airline would need to be moved. Plus, 1000-odd families of Air India employees and “an Air India hostel housing cadet pilots, trainee engineers, etc will also be relocated,” according to a spokesperson for Air India. If MIAL receives the go-ahead to move the AAI staffers as well, nearly 700 more families would be shifted.
