New Delhi: Seeking to give a fresh lease of life to Mumbai airport's modernisation plan, the Supreme Court today asked Maharashtra government to consider the Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd's (MIAPL) plea to rehabilitate slum dwellers who have encroached the airport land.
MIAPL, a joint venture between Airport Authority of India and the GVK-led consortium, has challenged the Bombay High Court order prohibiting the state government from notifying any slum for redevelopment after the cut-off date of January 1, 1995.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan directed the state government to consider MIAPL's application giving details of slum rehabilitation schemes notwithstanding the High Court order.
Senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for MIAPL, argued the High Court's direction against extension of the cut-off-date would impact the joint venture's plans to modernise, upgrade and develop the Mumbai airport.
