Airport: Villagers raise concern

Kanchipuram: The residents of Vadamangalam village in the district have raised their concerns over the proposed acquisition of lands for expansion of the existing airport at Meenampakkom and for the new Greenfield airport.
The residents, under the leadership of Panchayat Union chairman Saminathan yesterday approached the district collectorate authorities with pleas to avert their probable displacement.
As per the authorities, the Airport Authority of India officials would soon visit the places and decide on the acquisition of land.
Around 1070 acres were needed for the expansion project whereas the new airport wanted around 4800 acres, which could also include lands in Vadamangalam, Tirupanithiyur and Mambakkam villages, they said.
