Canadian pub owner of Indian descent jailed over hoax terrorist threat

A canadian pub owner was sent to jail for 44 months yesterday for falsely tipping off the Singapore police about an alleged terror plot.
Canadian Nanda Suhdir Kumar, who is of Indian descent, had made three telephone calls within an hour on Nov 6 last year, telling the police that a terrorist on board Air India flight 481 from Singapore to New Delhi was going to crash the plane..
Nanda, 53, had made the calls from three locations — Changi Airport Terminal 1, Singapore Expo and at a block of flats in Haig Road — warning the police that if they did not stop the terrorist, they would be responsible for the deaths of the passengers..
He was arrested a week after making the calls and charged with three counts of communicating false threats of terrorist acts. Nanda, who could have been jailed up to five years on each charge, was instead sentenced to 22 months' imprisonment on each, with two of the charges to run consecutively.
.The police had wasted time and resources in responding to the hoaxes, said District Judge Victor Yeo, and the court had to send a clear message to deter other would-be perpetrators.
Nanda, represented by lawyer Subhas Anandan of Khattar Wong & Partners, has appealed against the sentence.
