Indian strike called off as govt agrees to clear arrears early

New Delhi: Irksome hold-ups at airports bothered passengers, who had booked for Indian flights, with no relief in sight even after the strike by 12,700 employees of the state-owned carrier was called off on Thursday afternoon. Delays persisted till late evening and normalcy is not expected before Friday. The Indian management and the civil aviation ministry declared that the strike has been called off.
However, the backlog created due to the two-day strike is expected to put pressure on the airline’s network, leading to a lingering effect on Friday too.
Several flights were cancelled and others were delayed on Thursday as anxious passengers had to face a tough time at airports across the country. The strike dragged on even as negotiations between employees and the Indian management resumed and a deal was struck early in the afternoon on Thursday.
It is understood that the tough stand of the civil aviation ministry, court orders against the strike and the chief labour commissioner’s initiatives helped in bringing the agitating employees back to the negotiation table.
