The long awaited plan for a new airport in Navi Mumbai was given the green signal by the state cabinet. The proposed green-field international airport is estimated to cost Rs. 9970 crores.
The airport will be constructed in four phases through a Public-Private partnership. The airport once constructed, will have the capacity to provide services to around 40 million passengers annually. This new airport is some 40 kilometers away from the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
The project cost estimates and plans have been worked out by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). Phase-I which is scheduled to last from 2008 to 2012, would cost Rs. 4,200 crores and would enable the airport to cater to 10 million people per annum (mppa). Phase-II (2015-2017) would cost Rs. 1,896 crores and will provide services to 20 million people annually. Phase-III (2020-2022) would cost another Rs. 1,600 crores for an additional capacity of 10 mppa. Phase-IV (2026-2028) would further facilitate 40 mppa at a cost of Rs. 2,272 crores.
A committee under the Civil Aviation Ministry, consisting of officials from that ministry, state government, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and from CIDCO will coordinate the management of resources. The committee will keep a tab on the implementation of the project including finances, preparing tenders, biding process and other factors.
