Naresh Goyal's mafia links back on trail

Mumbai/New Delhi: It is an old controversy that comes alive again, the Bombay High Court on Thursday asked Mumbai's Police Commissioner to file a report within four weeks on the alleged mafia links of Jet Airways owner Naresh Goyal.
The court's directive comes in response to a PIL filed which quotes a letter written by the intelligence agencies to the Home Ministry claiming that Goyal had links with the underworld.
Allegations of Goyal's links have surfaced periodically even in the US when an US company asked that Jet not be allowed to use its name to fly to that country.
The Bombay High Court, according to the petitioner's lawyer has directed the Mumbai Police to file a report within four weeks on Goyal's alleged links to the underworld.
Backed by a letter allegedly written by the Intelligence Bureau to the Union Home Ministry a Delhi based journalist filed a PIL in the Mumbai High Court against Naresh Goyal.
In the letter dated 12th Dec 2001 Anjan Gosh, Joint Director, Intelligence wrote to the Joint Secretary Sangeeta Gairola "Our enquiries have established that Naresh Goyal and his Jet Airways have been steady recipients of large dubious investments originating from one Gulf Sheikhs.Much of this kind of money is generated through smuggling, extortion and similar illegal practices. We have confirmed information of intermittent contacts between Naresh Goyal and underworld dons Chotta Shakeel and Dawood Ibrahim to settle financial issues. There is strong suspicion that parts of Goyal's investments may have accrued through the assistance of underworld groups".
