Pilot step saves baby’s life

Kolkata: A quick decision of Captain MS Reddy, pilot of the Jet Airways flight from Kolkata to Bangalore via Hyderabad, saved the life of 22-day-old AR Rahman this afternoon.
The parents of the child, Mrs M Akhtar and Mr A Sayem, are Bangladeshi nationals who arrived from Dhaka this morning. The child is suffering from Shallot’s tetratology, a congenital heart disease. The family was on their way to Bangalore for the child’s treatment. They boarded the Jet Airways flight which took off from Kolkata at 2:40 p.m. As the flight gained height the respiratory problem of the child became increasingly acute. Being informed of the incident after flying for about 20 minutes, the pilot told Air Traffic Control officials the details and said that he was returning to NSC Bose Airport owing to medical emergency. ATC officials arranged for the emergency landing of the flight which touched down at 3:26 p.m. The airport doctors had also arranged for the child’s admission to the ICU of a nearby nursing home. The doctors remarked that a little more delay would have been fatal for the child.
