Manama: The merger of Indian national carriers, Air India and Indian, will be completed in four months, making the new airline one of the largest in Asia, it was revealed in Bahrain yesterday. Both airlines. which have now separate offices in Bahrain and other parts of the world, will redeploy their staff and work under one umbrella, said Air India's regional director for Gulf, Middle East and Africa Freddie Vaz.
"However, it will take one or two years before the total merger becomes a reality," he told a Press conference at the Y B A Kanoo headquarters in Manama.
Mr Vaz, who was a former Air India manager in Bahrain, said Air India Express was currently operating 10 flights a week to Bahrain.
"The merger will not affect the new budget airline's operations," he added.
"In fact, plans are under way to expand Air India Express services to all points in the Gulf."
On the delays experienced by Air India Express on its Bahrain operations, Mr Vaz said it was due to some technical reasons and steps have been taken to rectify the same.
Air India currently operates 94 flights and Air India Express 50 flights on the Gulf- India sector every week.
