Peripheral activities in airports such as setting up food courts, malls and duty-free shops have come into sharp focus with new airports being built and present ones being refurbished. This is good news not only for travellers and the Airports Authority of India, but even intermediate companies who will set up such facilities.
Zooming in on one such facility is the quick service restaurants (QSRs) that are vying for the limited and grossly invaluable airport space that is high on footfalls and only growing. Firstly, there has been a deluge of budget airlines that don't include meals onboard. Neeraj Jain, CEO of Pulse Foods India says, "Purchasing food onboard is an option but the quality is questionable and the price is above MRP. This is one reason why outlets in airports will be viable not only for operators but for customers as well."
Secondly, airports have understood that basic necessities must be met to reach international standards of service - and food is on their priority list. While the Delhi and Mumbai airports are undergoing expansions to hold passenger traffic, private operators have outlined plans for defined outlets, shops, etc.
