Shape up or face the axe, HC tells airhostesses

New Delhi: Delhi High Court today told a group of “overweight” Indian (Airlines) airhostesses to trim down or face the axe, basing its reasoning on two criteria — cut-throat competition and high-altitude emergencies.
Justice Rekha Sharma, who was hearing a petition filed by four airhostesses who were grounded six years ago for crossing the body weight limit as per the norms of the airline, said today: “If by perseverance the snail could reach the Ark, why can’t these worthy ladies stand on and turn the scale.”
The court said the safety of passengers depended on the cabin crew’s alacrity and presence of mind. It added: “No airline can afford to remain lax in any department whatsoever, be it the personality of the crew members or their physical fitness.”
Justice Sharma did not give much credence to the airhostesses’ claim that the weight policy of the airline was an “insult to their womanhood”.
