SpiceJet spices up plan to fly overseas

Mumbai: Low- cost carrier SpiceJet is the latest to join the bandwagon of domestic airlines eyeing international operations. Subject to government approvals, SpiceJet could start operating international flights as early as January 2008.
Currently, among the private players, only Jet Airways and Sahara have the permission to fly overseas. However, since both of them are full service carriers, air fares are comparable with what other major players offer. The Vijay Mallya-run Kingfisher Airlines also has a strategy to ply international routes from its US-based operations.
Khaled Al Kamda, V-C of Istithmar — a UAE-based private equity group, which holds 22% stake in SpiceJet, told TOI, "We are keen on taking SpiceJet international. We are awaiting clarity on the regulations from the Indian government, which is expected by 2008."
