The progress of work on the would-be International Airport in Gelephu has been delayed as the survey team from the Airport Authority of India, having completed the preliminary survey, did not turn up for the final survey despite “many requests”, according to officials of the Department of Civil Aviation.
The department’s director, Phala Dorji, said that the preliminary survey was completed in May last year and was to be followed by a final survey in September, three months later.
“The second visit by the team was supposed to address the airport’s master plan from which we could do the actual work,” said Phala Dorji.
The preliminary survey identified Nayabasti under Bur gewog in Gelephu for the International Airport. The land requirement is about 900 to 1,000 acres. Paro airport has 150 acres.
After the first survey in Nayabasti, metrological equipments were installed at the site, people were posted, and information like the wind temperature were also collected daily.
