New Delhi: The run-up to the merger of Air India-Indian Airlines has hit a new stumbling block which, if not resolved, could even force the government to tweak the model. Since completely merging the systems of these airlines will take at least a year, the merged company — National Aviation Company India Ltd (NACIL) — management wants to keep using the designated codes AI and IC for some time.
But with Indian Airlines all set to lose its identity, talks are on with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to use its code IC even after the merger takes place.
"The IATA rule is one airline, one designated codename. A company can have different codes for its legacy, low cost and cargo carriers. But IA and AI are being merged to form one airline.." said a senior official.
Sources said a total amalgamation of AI, IA systems would take up to two years and till then having a reservation system in which a common boarding card can be issued won’t be possible.
